Why You Should Avoid Self Medication in Ayurved?

You might have brought an Ayurvedic medicine and tried self-medicating. And it may have proved utterly useless! Or that the results may have gone completely opposite than you expected.

Maybe now you have started to doubt Ayurved due to this? Or maybe it’s your false assumptions about self-medication that should be questioned!

Let us find out.

Many people talk to us about their experiences with Ayurvedic treatment they have taken somewhere.
And they share that they did try Ayurvedic treatment to cure their diseases. But they found out it was not very effective. It did not work well in their case.

On asking who was their doctor, or whom did they consult, they say we did not consult anyone. We just approached a nearby Ayurvedic store which is in their town. They referred to some reference books, magazines, articles about ayurvedic and then we started our treatment on our own.

Is it the correct way? Take a closer look.

This is one of the most important factors to consider while we take any ayurvedic treatment. We take Ayurved for granted. We don’t do this with allopathic medicines. Whenever we take any allopathic medicine for our diseases, we consult a registered allopathic practitioner or doctor, and only then do we start the medicine.

But as far as Ayurved is concerned, everyone thinks they know what to take. And we start self-medication. Because we assume we know what to consume and what not to. We don’t bother to approach a registered ayurvedic doctor or an experienced practitioner.

This is a major concern in ayurvedic medicine. And this is one of the biggest reasons why ayurvedic medicine is not being effective. Therefore, people share their not so good experiences and start believing that Ayurved was not as effective in their case.

The reason is here. Ayurved is the age-old tradition of healing by Nature just for you. It is a medication for you, to keep you healthy. But that does not mean one should start medication based on assumptions. It is a systematic approach to medicine, like other medicinal streams.

So what should be the right thing?

Whenever you have any onset of disease you should consider Ayurved first and if it is not at all effective in your case, then only you should resort to another kind of parallel medicine. But if you want to experience the efficacy or power of Ayurved, what you need to consider the most is – consult a registered ayurvedic practitioner/doctor and then start your medication under his supervision and guidance. Only then it is an authentic ayurvedic treatment.
Otherwise trying self-medication, or by reading any random article or the opinion of the store owner, and starting ayurvedic medicine is not the right approach.

This is a major problem prevailing in the entire country. People take Ayurved for granted. It is a humble request to all that whenever you wish to take ayurvedic medicine, consult an ayurvedic doctor or a registered practitioner for any of your diseases. It should be medication for the self rather than a self-medication approach.

The month of Shravana to Bhadrapada (Mid July to Mid September) marks the start of the Dakshinayan or Southern Solstice. As per Ayurved, this season is called Varsha Ritu or as we call it today as Monsoon Season.

Ayurved says that Vata is pacified and pitta is accumulated during Varsha Ritu. Continuous rains, humid atmosphere, and low temperatures result in aggravation of Vata which was already formed during the dry summers. Pitta also gets accumulated because of acidic atmospheric conditions.
