What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS affects the large intestine and is a fairly common disorder. Constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and cramping are common symptoms of this condition.
Described as a chronic, functional disorder of the small intestine, it is associated with discomfort, diarrhea, and pain. In western medicine, the exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown.
An IBS condition is called grahani in Ayurveda, which means that this disorder eclipses the intestine’s ability to digest. The condition is called grahani in which the bowels lose control and its absorption is weakened.
What are the causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
- Consumption of too much food or excessive fasting
- Eating junk/packaged food
- Eating again before digestion of the previous meal is complete
- Consuming ill-suited food
- Constant loose motion, diarrhea, or food poisoning
- A diet high in heavy, cold, dry, junk, and polluted foods
- Unnatural suppression of natural urges
- Poor sleep habits
- Anger, grief, or fear
- Weak digestion caused by chronic illness
- Weakened immune system
- Constant travel and change of places
What are the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS usually presents long-term signs and symptoms that vary depending on the severity. Some of the most common include:
Bowel movement-related pain, cramping or bloating
Bowel movements that change in appearance
Changes in the frequency of your bowel movements
If your bowel habits change frequently or you are experiencing other symptoms of IBS, you should talk to your doctor. The following signs and symptoms are more serious:
- Loss of weight
- A nighttime diarrhea
- The rectal bleeding
- Anemia due to iron deficiency
- Vomiting without apparent cause
- An inability to swallow
- Passing gas or having a bowel movement does not relieve persistent pain
Modern versus Ayurvedic treatment options
The most common treatment for the initial phase of IBS is almost always antibiotics. However, antibiotics do not make any long-term difference as IBS is not essentially a pathogenic infection. Besides, another line of treatment includes antidepressants that lower the rate of movement in the digestive tract. This is a temporary solution that helps to prevent irritation and abnormal bowel movement in the intestines. But, this symptomatic treatment may lead to multiple side effects in the long run.
What are the causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Ayurveda treats not the disease but the body and this approach mark the radical difference between the modern and Ayurvedic treatment for IBS.
Personalized treatment
According to Ayurveda, each person has a distinct constitution. The same disease has different variations based on the dominant dosha.
The Ayurveda treatment for IBS commences with the determination of the patient’s constitution, medical history, and current health status.
Ayurvedic treatment for IBS is completely personalized. In other words, depending upon the symptoms and variations of IBS, the treatment of one patient can be drastically different from that of another.
Eliminate the cause
As the first step towards complete relief, Ayurveda removes the causal factors for IBS. These factors may differ from person to person. But the essential approach of correcting the cause remains the same for all.
Ayurvedic treatment for IBS starts with correcting the dietary and lifestyle habits that may trigger or aggravate IBS.
Shodhana Chikitsa or The Digestive Detox
Shodhana or the body detox is an indispensable feature in Ayurvedic treatment for IBS. This body detox helps to remove the intestinal irritants and ama (digestive toxins) that result in IBS.
Panchkarma (a package of five types of body detox) is very helpful to achieve a metabolic deep cleanse. The primary panchkarma in the case of IBS treatment is virachana or purgative therapy for the lower digestive tract. This complete detox treatment not only cleanses the intestines but the entire body through the digestive tract.
Shaman Chikitsa or The Toxin Removal Treatment
Strengthen the digestive fire
The main aim of Ayurvedic medicines in the Ayurvedic treatment for IBS is to rekindle and strengthen the digestive fire. This strong digestive fire, in turn, helps to digest and eliminate the remaining toxins from the digestive tract.
A strong digestive system can extract more nutrition from food and medicine. Thus, it empowers the intestines with nutrition and ensures faster wound healing and rejuvenation.
There are two steps to strengthen the digestive fire –
As the first step, vaidya advises light and easily digestible food to the patient. This light food helps to provides instant energy, lubricates the intestines, and removes dryness, discomfort and pain.
In the second step, vaidya adds suitable digestives to enhance the digestive capacity. This enhanced digestive capacity helps to break down the toxins accumulated in the intestines. Besides, with strong digestion and revitalizing food, patient also gains overall strength and stamina.
Balance the dosha
Another important aim of Shaman Chikitsa is to regain the dosha balance in the body. Ayurvedic treatment for IBS includes medicated food, a healing lifestyle, and herbal medications. This comprehensive healing leads to a lasting relief in the case of IBS.
The ideal Ayurvedic treatment for IBS aims to balance all three dosha. However, it focuses on the main dosha responsible for IBS and treats the disease accordingly.
Support Recuperation
Another class of medicines called Rasayana medicine helps the patient to recuperate and regain the perfect state of health. In this stage of treatment, the patient gradually reduces the dosage of primary medicines and steps back into a normal healthy routine.
