What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic and a major non communicable disease which affects both children and adults. It is a condition which affects the airways of the lungs.
Lungs have tubes like airways which takes the air in and out. Due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small airways, the air passages in the lungs get narrow. The person may experience coughing, wheeze or tightness in the chest. The symptoms may range from mild to severe.

There are also various ‘triggers’ which makes the symptoms worse. These triggers are very individualistic and vary from person to person. But some of the commonly found ‘triggers’ are dust, smoke, fumes, pollen, grass, feathers, fur, change in weather, smoke, strong perfume, viral infection and many more.

There are three major signs which proves someone is suffering from Asthma:

  • Inflammation: Asthma can cause bronchial tubes in your lungs to be red and swollen. This can damage your lungs. A proper treatment is the key to cure Asthma in the long run.
  • Airway Blockage: Generally, when a person breathes, the bands of muscles around the airways are relaxed, allowing easy movement of air. But when one has asthma, the muscles tighten, making it harder for the air to pass.
  • Irritation in the Airway: People who suffer from Asthma have sensitive airways, and slight triggers may react with the muscles.

In Ayurved, the excess of Kapha dosha blocks the flow of air which results in spasms in the bronchial area, resulting in such a condition.

Allergic

Allergic Asthma is caused due to an allergic reaction. It can also be called Allergy Induced Asthma. People who suffer from this have trouble after inhaling an allergen. It is easier to treat than bronchial asthma. When an allergen enters while inhaling, the airways swell due to an allergic reaction. Some common allergens are: Pollen, dust, strong odors, chemical fumes and tobacco or smoking.
