What is Menopause

Menopause is a Greek Word- ‘menos’ means month and ‘pause’ means to stop.

Menopause is a condition which happens when a woman has not menstruated for 12 consecutive months. Due to this she can no longer become pregnant. This occurs between the ages of 45-55. This phase marks the end of the reproductive years.

Women’s all born with all their eggs stored in ovaries. Ovaries are responsible for secretion of estrogen and progesterone, which is responsible for their menstruation, and release of eggs. Menopause is that condition when a woman’s ovary no longer releases the eggs monthly, thus the menstruation stops. It is a part of a women’s aging process which happens after the age of 40.
For some women, their menopause is very easy. For some, it is very painful and they have to undergo surgery to remove their ovaries. If this process happens before the age of 40, it is called premature menopause.

Causes of Menopause

There are many factors which determine the onset of a woman’s menopause. It could be genetics or health of the ovaries. It Could be divided into three phases- Premenopause, Menopause, Postmenopause.

Premenopause
This phase starts many years before menopause when ovaries slower down and make less estrogen. In the later stages, estrogen levels fall faster.

Menopause
This phase can be labelled as the year when you don’t get a period at all. The eggs have stopped releasing as well as estrogen.

Postmenopause
These are the effects of menstruation. The loss of estrogen creates many problems in the body like mood swings, feeling loss of interest etc

Why should we consider Ayurved?

In Ayurved, the menopause phase is called “Rajonivrutti” which means the end/stop of menstruation. Rajonivrutti is marked by an aggravation of the Vata Dosha. This results in an imbalance of all the doshas. This results in ‘Dhatu Kshaya’ or decline in body tissue mass, which henceforth leads to ageing.

When a woman enters the menopause stage, she is transforming into the Vata dominating period of life. So the question is, how do we balance menopause with our daily lives? Know that for certain that we can still apply the Ancient wisdom of Ayurved to modern day living and get miraculous benefits.

Female hormones serve vital Pitta and Kapha functions. Therefore it is very necessary to balance these doshas to maintain a healthy level during the menopause stage. Because of low Ojas, the body is under tension and leads to increased cortisol levels, high blood pressure, and increased heart rates. This accelerates Pitta in the body which is ready to attack any threat. So there is an imbalance of Vata and Pitta levels together.

  • Imbalance Vata leads to decreased digestive fire
  • Hot flashes due to high Pitta
  • High vata leads to dryness in vagina
  • High vata leads to dryness in tissues.
